Campaigners lobby Westminster over abortion law

09/10/2008
Campaigners for changes to the law regarding abortions in Northern Ireland have lobbied MPs at Westminster, which may interest those in the legal profession.

The Irish Times reports that up to 40 protestors from the Alliance for Choice group also delivered a letter to Downing Street. The 40 women were representing the alleged number of women to leave Northern Ireland each week to get a termination elsewhere.

Labour MP Dianne Abbot met with the group after she tabled an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, which calls for extensions to be made to the Northern Ireland abortion bill.

Currently, a woman can only be granted an abortion in the province if it can be proved that either her physical or mental health is at risk.

Dawn Purvis, leader of the Progressive Unionist Party and east Belfast Assembly member, said that the current law added to the trauma of those women who find themselves facing a "crisis" pregnancy.

Abortion legislation in Northern Ireland was recently branded "seriously misleading" by American-based academic Professor John Keown, in response to a query over the law by a solicitors' group.
