Lack of beds 'sparks baby bug'

15/05/2007
It has been claimed that a lack of beds at hospitals in Northern Ireland is resulting in overcrowding and the spread of a potentially deadly virus.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that the spread of the dangerous illness between three premature babies could have been the result of overcrowding in Belfast's Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital.

Dr David Sweet, lead clinician at the hospital, argues that the "chronic" shortage of neo-natal beds has resulted in this type of problem.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Dr Sweet concluded: "We've been lobbying for a long time to improve the conditions but it becomes more stark when you get an incident like this occurring. Staffing and overcrowding are serious issues."
