HMRC warns of fraudulent emails
08/01/2009
Businesses and self-employed individuals in Northern Ireland may be left seeking the services of solicitors following news that thousands are being targeted by fraudsters.
Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning that fraudsters are taking advantage of the upcoming January 31st self-assessment tax deadline to defraud taxpayers.
The scams deceive consumers to reveal their bank or credit card details by stating that they are due for a tax refund, which HMRC needs to deposit in their bank accounts.
"This is the most sophisticated and prolific phishing scam that we have encountered," revealed HMRC chief executive Lesley Strathie. "We only ever contact customers who are due a refund in writing by post.
She added: "We never use emails, telephone calls or external companies in these circumstances."
According to the HMRC, taxpayers were forwarding as many as 500 of the fraudulent emails to authorities every day and consumers should be vigilant or they risk losing money.
