FG Wilson to lay off 260

09/01/2009
Northern Ireland continues to take a hit as the credit crunch wrecks havoc on businesses in the province, with engineering firm FG Wilson emerging as the latest casualty of the downturn.

The company has announced that it is to cut more than 250 jobs across its three bases in Larne, Springvale and Monkstown, which will make redundant 138, 77 and 45 workers respectively.

"Unfortunately, market conditions have continued to worsen and we need to lower our production volumes further to take account of the reduced demand for our products," a statement from the company said.

"As a result, we are proposing up to 260 redundancies in our permanent workforce. This is subject to consultation with employees and their representatives."

Solicitors in Belfast may be concerned to hear that the move comes following last month's laying off of some 180 workers by the same firm, who had been hired through an agency.
