Government moves to secure future jobs
12/01/2009
Business and union leaders are being engaged by the government to adopt measures that will help provide jobs as the country heads towards a recession, solicitors in Northern Ireland may want to know.
With employment figures approaching two million, the prime minister hopes that spending half a billion will enable half a million people to get back into work through training.
Speaking to an audience at the Science Museum in London, Gordon Brown stated that employers will be rewarded with up to £2,500 pounds for every individual employed.
"Failure to act now and to do so in coordination with our international partners would mean a deeper and longer global recession," he said. "It would mean temporary rises in unemployment becoming permanent.
"It would mean as in the past whole communities written off, and that would mean lasting damage to our economy and a bigger bill to pay in the future. And this will not happen on my watch."
Last week engineering firm FG Wilson laid off 260 employees.
