Nortel files for bankruptcy prompting job fears
16/01/2009
More than 600 people in Northern Ireland are facing uncertainty over their jobs following news that solicitors for Nortel, which has a Northern Ireland base, have filed for bankruptcy protection on behalf of the company.
The County Antrim firm with Canadian roots, which employs over 500 people at Monkstown, Newtownabbey, and some 300 in Galway, is a telecoms industry operator.
It is unclear how this development will affect the company's workers in the province as they have been told to continue operating as usual pending a later announcement.
According to Alliance East Antrim assembly member Sean Neeson, this development is concerning given the type of jobs the company provides in the province.
He said: "The company provides a large number of high quality, highly paid jobs in the East Antrim area and my main concern is the welfare and future of employees at the Monkstown site."
Around 2,000 people are employed by the Canadian firm in the UK.
