Redundancy a time to reassess skills
05/02/2009
One of the pieces of advice solicitors in Northern Ireland can give to their clients if they are made redundant is to think about what other skills they could use to forge a new career.
This is the recommendation of the Money Advice Trust, which says that people need to be aware that there may be another area they can turn their attention to and make a career out of.
Beccy Boden Wilks, a spokesperson of the organisation, said: "There's been lots of stuff in the media at the moment because of all the redundancies, about retraining and transferable skills.
"If you've worked in the building trade or if you've worked in the finance sector then, yes, you might struggle to get work in those sectors again because they're falling apart, but there might be something else that you can do."
A recent survey of managers by the Chartered Management Institute revealed that 51 per cent of the respondents believed that the current economic climate was the "perfect opportunity to reassess [their] career".
