Minimum wage dodgers targeted

17/05/2007
The government has announced plans to crack down on employers that are paying below the minimum wage.

Trade and industry secretary, Alistair Darling, is proposing a raft of new options that are designed to ensure employers in Britain and Northern Ireland are not able to get away with paying below the minimum wage.

"Paying less than the minimum isn't only unfair to the workers - it's unfair to the vast majority of employers who obey the law, because it lets rogue businesses undercut them," said Mr Darling.

As such, the minister has proposed a number of options including fixed penalty fines.

Mr Darling added: "When we brought in the national minimum wage, we worked closely with business to make sure it was introduced in a 'light-touch' way. It has become part of daily business life. No-one should be in any doubt as to what they need to do."

Employees who are being paid below the minimum wage can contact their solicitors as their employer will be breaking the law.
