More tax cuts imminent, PM hints
19/02/2009
Businesses in Northern Ireland considering laying off staff due to the worsening economic conditions may benefit from more tax cuts in coming weeks as the government moves to stabilise the economy.
Solicitors in Belfast may be interested to hear that prime minister Gordon Brown has hinted at more tax cuts and even a recovery "within the next few months".
The prime minister alluded to the fact that the forthcoming G20 summit of world leaders in London in April was vital as the leaders will try to put in place a "global deal and grand bargain".
"If we can get that action in place and rebuild trust and confidence in the world economy then recovery will be quicker," he said at his monthly Downing Street press conference.
"That is why I have been pressing so hard that some of the measures we have adopted in Britain we can persuade other countries to adopt."
One of the hardest hit sectors in Northern Ireland is construction, which has seen thousands laid off as building work slowed.
