Damage to property leaves family distraught
20/02/2009
A family in Northern Ireland may resort to seeking the services of a solicitor to push for compensation after their property was damaged by a bulldozer demolishing an adjacent building.
Despite the damage, Dean and Caroline Richman have been told that they will have to foot the repair bill for the damage to their property, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
The Co Down family's property was covered by insurance but because the adjacent building was pulled down without any planning permission, their insurer categorised the damage as deliberate.
"Even though he caused the damage we have to pay for all of it ourselves," Ms Richman is quoted by the newspaper as saying. "If we want to recoup the money we have to take him to court which could take years."
In spite of the building being knocked down without permission, the developer had not broken the law, according to a spokeswoman from the Planning Service.
