HMRC urges small businesses to file returns online
25/03/2009
Small businesses in Northern Ireland can get a £75 tax-free payment from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if they file their 2008/09 employer annual return online.
HMRC is urging companies with less than 50 employees to take advantage of the online platform to submit their returns, although they still have the option to file their returns on paper.
"We are accepting returns now and would urge all employers to send them in as soon as they are ready, to avoid any last-minute rush," explained HMRC's Sue Williams.
However, solicitors in Belfast representing companies with 50 or more employees should ensure their clients file their returns online only or they risk facing a penalty.
Agents, tax advisers or payroll bureaux can be enlisted to help with filing on behalf of employers and the tax-free bonus for small companies will still be paid even if an intermediary is used for the online filing.
Short, online advice videos for businesses were recently launched by HMRC.
