Northern Ireland architecture sector badly hit by downturn

31/03/2009
As many as 400 jobs have been lost in Northern Ireland's once-booming architecture sector over the past 12 months alone, it has been revealed.

New figures compiled by the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUS) show that one in five professional positions has been axed as a result of the downturn.

Furthermore, 30 per cent of those firms polled stated that there was simply not enough work going to keep all their employees on, alluding to the cancelling of many projects which has seen many developers seek professional help from solicitors in Northern Ireland over recent months.

"We're very much at the front edge so as new projects start to slow down, and the money isn't there for developers from the banks, architects tend to get hit fairly quickly," Dawson Stelfox, RSUS president, explained.

"And because it's been small numbers spread across quite a wide area, I don't think it's come to people's attention but it has been quite severe," he added.

Earlier this month, a study carried out by Which? found that around four in five Northern Ireland consumers fear the economy will take at least a year to start improving.
