Asbestos linked to ovarian and larynx cancer

A group of World Health Organisation scientists has shed more light on the effects of asbestos and added ovarian cancer and cancer of the larynx to the diseases that can arise from exposure to the material.
Mesothelioma is the cancer most associated with the disease and solicitors in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK have represented countless sufferers in compensation cases after coming down with the disease.
In a report in the Lancet Oncology, the scientists argued that the building material may be able to cause cancers of the bowel, the stomach and the throat.
People exposed to the lethal building material, which was preferred because it offered better insulation, can take up to 40 years to develop mesothelioma, with men five times as likely to get the disease as women.
This is because most cases of exposure would have happened at work.
According to Cancer Research UK, around 2,100 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the UK every year.
Lyn Harris, head of employment and litigation at Wilson Nesbitt Solicitors said: "Asbestos exposure may not manifest itself as harmful for years after exposure and we would strongly urge anyone with symptoms who has come into contact with this material in the past to see their doctor and to contact us."
