Crimes against business 'on the up'
03/08/2009
Crimes against businesses are on the up due to the recession, it has been claimed.
According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), its figures show that 64 per cent of businesses in the UK and Northern Ireland have been a victim of crime in the past year, up from 57 per cent in 2006.
A spokesperson for the body said that crime can affect businesses in a variety of ways, ranging from vandalism to theft, ID fraud and phishing scams.
The cost of this is that small firms lose an average of £13,500 a year because of crime and up to £800 a year due to fraud and online crime.
However, the spokesperson stated that less than half of these firms report crimes, suggesting that they feel they do not get an adequate response from the police.
The body is urging firms to report any crimes against them and also to invest in measures such as internet security software to help prevent fraud.
