Large increase in divorce rates expected in 2010

04/01/2010

While the economy seemingly being on the up is good news for most, it is suspected that it might not bode well for lots of couples in the UK who had been avoiding divorce during the uncertainty that came with the recession.

Many solicitors throughout Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK noted that clients were holding off on divorce pending a notable improvement in the outlook of the economy; in particular house prices and increased activity in the property market.

Divorce rates in the UK are among the highest in the world, with nearly 12 divorces per 1,000 married couples.

January may well be one of the busiest months for divorces, according to unbiased.co.uk’s chief executive Karen Barrett.

“Traditionally, more people file for divorce in January than at any other time of the year because they decide to take action after the Christmas break,” she explains.

“While the credit crunch has led to many people to put off major financial decisions, seeking professional advice as soon as possible is always the best step to get your financial affairs in order.”

Wilson Nesbitt have prepared a "Family-welcome Pack" for spouses seeking to initiate divorce proceedings in the New Year.  The detailed information packs explain in easy to understand language the procedure involved in and the financial implications of divorce.  They also set out the options available to couples seeking to separate.  You can request a pack by contacting Wilson Nesbitt solicitors in Belfast by email at family@wilson-nesbitt.com or by calling 0800 840 1363.
