NI 'saw fewer divorces' in 2008
29/01/2010
The number of divorces that occurred in Northern Ireland dropped to a lower level in 2008, new figures reveal.
According to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, there was a 4.8 per cent reduction in the divorces that took place in the country, when compared to the previous year.
The 12-month period is said to have seen a total of 2,773 divorces, which was lower than the 2,913 recorded during 2007.
Meanwhile, when it comes to the UK as a whole, the ONS figures suggest that a similar downward trend occurred.
While 2007 saw 143,955 official divorces, 136,026 took place the year after, marking a 5.5 per cent decrease.
Meanwhile, Relate's chief executive has recently highlighted the importance of relationship support, which she believes offers a valuable service.
The expert has noted that the government may need to commit more to this area in order to keep families together.
