PRS 'could help meet UK housing demand'
04/02/2010
The high demand for housing in the UK could be addressed with the support of the private-rented sector (PRS), according to one political figure.
It has been announced that a government-backed consultation is to look at the ways in which rental properties might improve the supply of affordable housing in the country.
Sarah McCarthy-Fry, Exchequer secretary to the Treasury, believes that the housing sector may need more than just new-builds to cater for public demand.
Talking about this issue, she commented: "The consultation we are launching today will ensure that we fully understand the contribution the PRS can make and identify any substantive barriers to investment."
Meanwhile, landlords based in Northern Ireland and other regions of the UK may need to improve their awareness of criminal behaviour, the National Landlords Association has suggested.
According to the body, gangs of criminals may be opting to carry out illegal operations within PRS properties.
