Hearing over first day of work death
20/06/2007
Two representatives from the construction industry have appeared in court to answer health and safety charges after a 17-year-old from Northern Ireland was killed in an accident on his first day at work.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, Lesley Wright from Wright and Son Contractors and Joe Murray, director of MMM Design and Build spoke only to confirm that they had no objections to the hearing going ahead. However, neither chose to comment on the charges brought against them.
Phillip Mulholland, a 17-year-old from Millisle, Co Down, was killed in February 2005 after a wall collapsed on him on his first day starting work at a Newtownards demolition site.
Mr Wright, of Newtownards, was charged with breaching safety regulations in the workplace by failing to maintain safety systems at a preliminary hearing. It emerged in court that Mr Wright also faces ten further charges that are similar in nature.
Mr Murray, from Bangor, was charged with failing to ensure the safety of persons not in his employment, the Belfast Telegraph reports, and MMM Design and Build faces three similar charges.
At Ards Magistrates Court, the men were released on bail of £500 and solicitors will have to wait to hear the outcome, as the case will be adjourned until September.
