Quinn wins dermatitis compensation

11/07/2007
James Quinn has won an undisclosed amount of compensation after solicitors negotiated a settlement with his former employers for a work-related dermatitis claim.

Mr Quinn, a machine driver for Mone Brothers Civil Engineering from 1985 to 2005, developed a dermatitis rash due to frequent physical contact with diesel, hydraulic and engine oils and lubricant grease, Legal and Medical magazine reports.

The allegation made by Mr Quinn was that his employers had been negligent because they had neither provided adequate washing facilities nor protective equipment at work, which had caused the dermatitis to develop.

Lee Carnell, Mr Quinn's solicitor, said: "This skin condition caused [Mr Quinn] unnecessary discomfort and it the correct preventative measures were taken then this would never have occurred."

Mr Quinn said: "I worked for Mone Brothers for almost 20 years and in this time there were not many sites where there were washing facilities. I am happy to be compensated for the dermatitis in which I had no control over developing."

Workers in Britain and Northern Ireland have every right to be safeguarded against industrial diseases, and as Mr Carnell pointed out, employers should realise the health risks when exposing employees to toxic substances and irritants.
