Medical negligence less likely from NI doctors

15/08/2007
A study has shown that solicitors receive fewer complaints about doctors who have been trained in Northern Ireland than those who have come overseas to practice.

Across Britain and Northern Ireland, the number of doctors from abroad who face complaints over service is double that of UK medical graduates.

Some 5,000 cases of medical malpractice were dealt with by the GMC last year, 303 of which resulted in a fitness-to-practice hearing. As many as 54 doctors were struck off in 2006 and 35 of those had earned their degrees overseas.

Although patients are responsible for a number of these complaints, nearly a third of grievances regarding foreign doctors came from colleagues in the health profession or the police.

At the same time, only 15 per cent of complaints were registered against UK-trained doctors within these groups.

Following this, the General Medical Council (GMC) is launching an inquiry into standards among foreign doctors.

Paul Philip, director of standards and fitness-to-practise at the GMC said: "The number of fitness-to-practise cases we deal with is going up year on year."
