Potholes cost a third of a million
24/01/2008
Solicitors in Belfast and Northern Ireland have secured nearly a third of a million pounds in compensation for victims of potholes on the province's roads over the last three years.
Drivers in Belfast and Northern Ireland were forced to contact their solicitors on 934 occasions in 2007, claiming for damage to their vehicles or for personal injuries due to potholes.
According to statistics, the Department of Regional Development (DRD), has paid out £329,456.12 on personal injury claims and in compensation for damage to vehicles since 2005.
Solicitors only settled three personal injury claims due to potholes last year and secured compensation on 445 occasions for vehicle damage.
The settlements cost £73,017.95 and this total could be increased when the 136 remaining outstanding claims are dealt with.
Solicitors in Belfast and Northern Ireland may be seeing a decrease in pothole-related personal injury claims, as in 2006 there were 132 more such cases settled than in 2007 so far.
A DRD spokeswoman told the Belfast Telegraph: "Roads Service has a cyclical defect inspection and repair regime that ensures our statutory commitment to maintain the roads in Northern Ireland is fulfilled. It is not possible under current funding levels to keep our roads pothole-free."
Within the past three years, solicitors in the province secured the most compensation for pothole claims in 2005, when the DRD paid out £155,422.29 in damages.
