Fraudsters target movers

07/03/2008
While people in Belfast and Northern Ireland have enough trouble affording their new home, they could find themselves having to contact solicitors for a whole range of issues if they do not inform organisations that they have moved house.

Solicitors in Belfast and Northern Ireland already see people struggling to finance a move, but failing to notify everyone of a change of address could mean that their money is at risk of fraudsters.

Peter Beckett, business development director for Iammoving.com, the change of address service, said that although it may be a pain, people that are moving house must ensure they notify everyone that they no longer live at their old address, otherwise they may have to call on solicitors if they get into hot water.

"I think people find the whole moving process quite stressful, and this is just one of those really annoying hassles…that they have to do. People try and fit it in and around everything else," Mr Beckett said.

"We reckon that, if you've got about 20 to 25 notifications that you need to make, you'll probably spread that over a number of months in and around your move date. But if you add it all together then it probably comes to over five hours' worth of full-on personal admin."

"When you move, it's one of the key points at which fraudsters can essentially obtain or adopt your identity. Empty properties receiving mail because of out-of-date address information offer a perfect opportunity for fraudsters to pick up [details] and then run with it," he added.

People in Belfast and Northern Ireland could find that they need solicitors to represent them if someone who has assumed their identity gets them into legal trouble.
