Neighbours' DIY errors cost £173m

14/04/2008
Some 594,960 Britons have their properties damaged by a neighbour's home improvements every year, adding up to a total of £173 million, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

And in one-in-three cases the victim had to pay for repairs themselves or claim on their own household insurance policy.

The average cost of such a problem is £291.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said that "errant DIYers" were damaging not only their own but also their neighbours' properties.

But, he said, it is "even more interesting … that so many victims handle the situation with typically British aplomb. Indeed, over two-thirds of them chose to pay towards the cost of repairing their home - rather than create a fuss".

Many repair costs can be claimed back on the neighbour's insurance policy rather than being paid for by the homeowner, Mr Rochester added.

Solicitors in Northern Ireland can be contacted to help sort out disputes between neighbours in Belfast and other parts of the country.

According to MSN, spending on DIY materials increased by 32 per cent between 1999 and 2005.
