'Jumbo jet's worth of people killed at work every fortnight'
25/04/2008
Enough people die at work to fill a jumbo jet every two weeks, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
This is due to a failure to maintain effective health and safety standards in the workplace, the society believes.
"If one jumbo jet crashed every two weeks killing all 400 people on board there would be a national outcry and that is the rate at which workers are dying," said occupational safety advisor for RoSPA Roger Bibbings.
The government's official accident figures also excluded the 1,000 people who are killed annually in work-related road accidents and between 6,000 and 24,000 people who die from work-related health conditions.
This excludes the 1.1 million work-related injuries that occur annually.
Solicitors in Northern Ireland can offer advice to anyone wishing to make a personal injury claim against an employer.
The TUC is holding a Workers' Memorial Day on April 28th to remember those who have died at work.
