Asbestos 'still present in Northern Ireland's schools'
30/04/2008
Some 93 schools in Northern Ireland still contain cancer-provoking asbestos in their buildings, according to 4NI.co.uk.
There are currently 65 Primary schools and 28 secondary schools which have asbestos insulation revealed education minister Catriona Ruane.
However, "all top priority asbestos has now been removed from school property", she claimed.
Responsibility for removing the substance now rests with the individual schools and their authorities concerned, Ms Ruane said.
In most cases where asbestos remains, it has been considered unnecessary to remove it or it is being dealt with by an asbestos management plan, the education department has confirmed.
Although teaching unions have said that they would like to see all asbestos removed, it has been argued that it is safer, cheaper and less disruptive to manage and isolate the material rather than remove it.
Solicitors in Northern Ireland can offer legal advice to those who feel they may have been affected by asbestos.
A recent survey by the British Lung Foundation found that less than a third of trades people were aware that working with asbestos carries a cancer risk.
