Cutbacks 'could have major effect on Northern Ireland healthcare'

20/05/2008
Cutbacks in the amount of money spent on healthcare provided by the NHS in Northern Ireland could "have a major impact on the services [it offers]", according to a union representative.

Up to 3,000 jobs could be lost in the Belfast Primary Care Trust area, Brian Campfield has claimed.

A leaked report has revealed what the Belfast Telegraph calls "radical proposals" which would include voluntary redundancies and encouraging staff to take early retirement.

Mr Campfield added that "a range of factors" have created "a very difficult financial situation".

However, he commented: "I have no idea how the trust, or any other trust could make those sort of cutbacks and still maintain the level of service."

In a statement, the trust said that a three per cent efficiency target Northern Ireland has been agreed by the Assembly and they are "looking to do things better".

Recently, the Department of Health claimed that one in three ambulances in Northern Ireland was too old.
