Public liability insurance 'should be legal requirement'
22/05/2008
Companies should be forced to take out public liability insurance, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
Solicitors can represent their clients in mounting campaigns against a firm in case of injury.
"Public liability insurance should be a legal requirement but it isn't", commented Steve Foulsham, technical services manager at Biba.
There are insurance packages available specifically to protect small companies against public liability claims, he added, saying that such insurance is one of the "essentials".
In addition, companies should take out employer liability insurance to cover claims against them from employees who are injured at work.
The Northern Ireland business insurance survey, carried out in September last year, found that the average cost of insurance premiums in the province fell by four per cent between 2006 and 2007.
Small businesses in Northern Ireland were paying on average £9,821, compared with £10,226 the year before.
