Out-of-date ambulance door falls off
04/06/2008
An ambulance operating in Northern Ireland with a sick pensioner on board was forced to stop when its door fell off its hinges.
The news came at a meeting of the Assembly Health Committee with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Trust, which also found that many ambulances in the province are more than six years old with over 150,000 miles on the clock - above the legal guidelines, the Ulster Herald reports.
Health committee member Tom Buchanan commented: "To have ambulances in circulation in such a state is unacceptable and one the [health] minister [Michael McGimpsey] must urgently address."
Mr Buchanan added that the figures raise "serious concerns" about the NHS's ability to respond to emergency calls "in a satisfactory and speedy manner", the newspaper quotes.
It has recently been announced that Northern Ireland will receive some 25 new ambulances every year.
