Employers 'must protect loneworkers'
04/06/2008
Employers, including those in Northern Ireland, have to ensure that members of staff who go out on their own are protected, the chief executive of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust told the Workplace law Network.
Steven Gauge said that while businesses in the country may be concerned about staying afloat during the credit crunch, they should not put safety to the back of their minds.
He told the Workplace Law Network: "We would urge everyone to make sure that they still have systems in place so that they know where their staff are, and training in place so that staff know how to avoid difficult situations and to diffuse potential violent situations."
Suzy Lamplugh was an estate agent who went missing while working in 1986 and has never been found.
Mr Gauge said there was "an awful lot more" that men could do to ensure their workplace safety.
Important factors for employers to consider include making their staff feel valued and prioritise workplace safety, he claimed.
Violence in the workplace has become increasingly common, to the extent that the University of Glamorgan is now offering a BSc (Hons.) in Professional Practice (Violence Reduction) for healthcare staff.
