MPs recommend education on domestic violence

The all-party home affairs select committee has recommended that children in both primary and secondary school be taught about domestic violence and forced marriage.
According to their report, the committee said it was "alarmed" that children are not educated about the issue.
It said that while prevention and early intervention is "essential" in tackling the problem, "education on these issues in schools seems to be at best variable, and at worst non-existent".
The committee also criticised the "desperate shortage" of refuge centres for abused partners and people at risk of forced marriage.
A national campaign raising awareness about the issue should be launched, the report advised.
In 2005-06, domestic violence cost the UK economy some £25 billion in costs through public services and help for victims.
Recent figures released by the Antrim police showed that there were 688 domestic abuse incidents in the area of Northern Ireland in 2007-08.
