Road deaths in Northern Ireland 'unacceptable'

18/06/2008
The death toll from road traffic accidents in Northern Ireland is "unacceptably high", it has been claimed.

A report carried out by the Criminal Justice Inspection has found that the quality of road traffic policing in Northern Ireland is too low, with measurable consequences.

The report found that children in Northern Ireland were three times more likely to die as a result of a road accident than their peers in the rest of the UK because of a lack of strict policing of road regulations.

It said: "The fear of being caught and prosecuted needs to be elevated, especially among those high risk groups."

People injured in road traffic incidents in Northern Ireland can use solicitors to claim against another party for expenses such as car insurance excess, loss of earnings or medical fees.

According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, in the year 2007-08, the total number of injury road traffic collisions increased by 12.6 per cent to 6,321 from 5,615 in 2006-07.
