"Surging" e-commerce driving growth
24/06/2008
Spending on online advertising in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK is set to overtake that used on television adverts for the first time in 2008, according to new estimates.
Research from Enders Analysis has found that the "surging" e-commerce market and the rise in the number of people watching television online has led to the increase.
The figures showed that more than 19 per cent of the total amount spent on advertising this year will go on online marketing - mainly based on paid internet searches such as Google.
During 2008, solicitors in Northern Ireland advising e-commerce firms could consider the importance of online advertising, as the report says spending on the medium will rise by 26.4 per cent.
Google has recently adapted its rules surrounding trademarks, with non-trademark owners allowed to bid on advertising spaces for searches by trademarked firms, something which solicitors have warned may lead to a legal challenge.
