"Worrying situation" in workplace fire safety

24/06/2008
Not all businesses in Britain and Northern Ireland are fully protected under fire safety regulation, it has been revealed.

Speaking to the Workplace Law Network, fire safety consultant Alan Cox said that many of the fire certificates he has found in businesses "were not worth the paper they were written on" because of new regulations.

Clive Raybould, another fire safety consultant, told Workplace Law that many businesses see fire safety as a "task" to be dealt with once a year whereas it should be taken into account in everyday business work practices.

He continued to say that in the inspections he has carried out, some 30 per cent of fire exit doors fitted with a certain kind of bolt do not work properly.

The only way for firms to combat this and maintain a good level of fire safety within their buildings would be to carry out "good, frequent management checks", he added to Workplace Law.

In 2006 the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) order was produced, which aimed to enforce a risk-based approach to fire safety and to make relevant legislation easier to understand.
