Good planning 'essential in avoiding commercial disputes'

01/07/2008
Drawing up clear contracts is essential to avoid commercial disputes in the technology industry, according to a contract lawyer.

Writing in the Yorkshire Post, Andrew Dyson said that both parties in a business agreement "have agreed in a thorough and clear contractual document prior to work starting".

In addition, if the terms of a contract need to be changed, such amendments should be clearly documented to avoid commercial disputes, Mr Dyson said.

He advised in the newspaper that any minor disagreements be recorded in writing because in court and legal discussions with solicitors more store will be put upon written evidence or emails than on a "vague recollection" months after the discussion.

Northern Ireland may be particularly vulnerable to conflict within the technology industry because it is one of the province's specialisms.

For example, The Northern Ireland Science Park in Belfast provides programs which are intended to encourage entrepreneurs to form technology companies in Northern Ireland.
