Smaller commercial property to have energy standards

02/07/2008
The government is planning to extend the energy performance certificate (EPC) scheme to all premises over 2,500 metres squared when built, sold or rented.

Under the existing EPC scheme, commercial buildings over 10,000 metres squared need to have an energy efficiency rating of A-G.

The average score has been a C rating and some of the most common recommendations from EPC reports have been to improve energy-efficient lighting, introduce solar control measures and to install solar water heating.

Local government minister Ian Wright said energy certificates are a "valuable" tool in tackling climate change by making people aware of the energy consumption of the buildings we use.

He added: "As part of introducing certificates we should now be thinking about how we reduce our own impact on the planet, and how we encourage and help local communities to become greener."

According to the minister, carbon dioxide emissions from buildings account for between 40 and 50 per cent of total CO2 pollution released from Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
