Work-related illness or injury 'affects 11.8 million'

15/07/2008
Injury or illness in the workplace has affected 11.8 million people in Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the last year, a new survey has found.

The statistics, produced by YouGov on behalf of insurer RSA, also showed 17 per cent of those injured or ill due to work-related injury or industrial disease have had to take time off work to recover.

According to the report, a quarter of those ill at work suffered from stress and a further quarter from back problems.

Employee workplace illness cost 30 million working days in 2006 and 2007 and work-related injury lost employers six million days.

Some 200,000 people in Britain and Northern Ireland have left work permanently due to such health problems, the report found.

RSA also discovered that more than half - 54 per cent - of those suffering problems have sought advice from solicitors about suing their employers.

The Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive has reported that back problems are the most common work-related injury, affecting around 10,000 people - 30 per cent of those suffering an illness caused by their job.
