'Consider the implications of divorce'
24/07/2008
Parents in Northern Ireland are being urged to consider the consequences of divorce on their children.
Family solicitor and blogger Diane Benussi said on the Benussi blog that statistically, divorce can cause problems for children growing up in Northern Ireland or worldwide and added that therefore parents should consider staying together for their sake.
Ways to do this include accepting that marriage isn't a fairytale and putting up with a partner's failings, spending a lot of time with the children or waiting until the children fly the nest before getting a divorce through solicitors.
Other tactics could be separating, using solicitors to sort out assets splits if necessary, but living close together so that children can go from one parent to another on a daily basis, Ms Benussi advised.
This would help by "minimising the physical and emotional disruption often caused by separation", she added.
In related news, EU states are currently considering the possibility of having a common divorce law.
