Employment law myth dispelled

25/07/2008
In response to confusion surrounding UK employment law rules on family discrimination, Computer Weekly has issued guidance for employers on the issue.

According to the publication, solicitors will advise that asking about family plans at a job interview is not illegal as long as the same question is asked of all candidates, it is phrased correctly and as long as the employer does not refuse a job to someone because of their family situation.

Suitable questions to ask of potential employees could include how they would find working overtime, or travelling a lot, the news provider advised.

In this way, they will relate to the job description and be relevant to the applicant's ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

According to the publication, not only could a sex discrimination case be costly, it could also reflect badly on the reputation of a firm.

Head of the equalities and human rights commission Nicola Brewer recently claimed that maternity laws are holding women back in business as employers are put off taking them on due to their generous maternity provisions.
