Equality bill poses problems for insurers

The equality bill that was put before parliament earlier this summer could pose problems for the insurance industry, one expert has suggested.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), has claimed that all things should not be entirely equal when it comes to insurance provision.

The proposals are designed in part to cut down on age discrimination but when it comes to car and travel insurance, an age-based criteria can be justified for a variety of reasons, Mr Trudgill maintains.

With this in mind, Biba is encouraging the government to allow insurers to continue their practices of offering services in a way that does not ignore the issue of a customer's age.

"We do believe in the equality bill, but we do believe that the insurance industry needs to be dealt with accordingly so that people should be able to get discounted products when they deserve them," said Mr Trudgill.

The equalities bill also includes aspects that could be relevant to entrepreneurs and employers with an investment in a family business.

Car insurance premiums have been rising in recent months with younger drivers among those most likely to be impacted, the AA reports.
