Construction industry jobs will be needed in the near future

Preserving engineering, surveying and architecture jobs in Northern Ireland should be given priority as these jobs will be needed once the financial downturn is over, it has been claimed.

A "stinging" letter highlighting the importance of taking such measures has been delivered to the NI Executive by construction industry professionals who are calling for urgent measures, reports 4ni.co.uk.

The open letter calls for the delivery of more public sector contracts to the sector among other issues, which can be delivered within the next 25 days, according to George Coulter, from the Professional College of the Construction Industry Group.

"The danger is that it takes about nine years to train chartered professionals in sectors such as engineering and architecture," he warned.

He went on to say that this could result in "a general slow-down in the construction of homes, roads, bridges and services such as water supply".

Several NI firms in the sector have already experienced redundancies in the past few weeks, solicitors in Belfast may want to know.
