Compensation delay highlighted

A man who was blinded after being shot has been talking to the Belfast Telegraph about the delays that he and other victims in the province face when trying to claim compensation from the Northern Ireland Office.

David Hanley said that since he originally spoke of the obstacles he encountered taking his case from the solicitors to the courts, other victims of violence have contacted him to show support.

The incident occurred in north Belfast in July 2005 and Mr Hanley has undergone a series of major operations since, but his case is only set to be heard this September. Mr Hanley will now meet up with people in similar situations to return their support.

Mr Hanley said: "The response has been fantastic and I can't believe the people who have contacted me. They really have given me a great boost. These people have suffered terrible experiences and also faced delays over their own compensation claims.

"They have given me good advice about the red-tape surrounding claims for compensation and I can't thank them enough.

"I have been waiting a long time to get this matter resolved, but when people contact me it really does give me hope."
