Northern Ireland public sector loses 4000 jobs

New figures compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers reveal that 4000 jobs have been cut in the Northern Ireland public sector over the last year, but that the extent of the cuts is not as bad as in many other regions of the UK, or that of the private sector in Northern Ireland.

While 4000 additional unemployed people is a significant number, it only represents a cut of 1.8% out of the 227,000 public sector positions in Northern Ireland before the first round of cuts. Various regions of England have seen over  a 5% cut in public sector jobs, with the South West of England experiencing a 5.9% job loss.

The number of public sector job losses is also not as bad as the drop in the private sector of Northern Ireland, which is estimated by Richard Ramsey, economist at Ulster Bank, to have fallen to 2003 output levels.

However, more cuts in the public sector are planned, and further private sector redundancies are expected as the economy shows no sign of strengthening in the upcoming months.
