Derry schools projects 'to boost construction employment'
Derry's slowing construction sector is set to be given a boost by the news that local contactors are to be used in the building of two new secondary schools in the city.
Coming as the Construction Employers' Federation in Northern Ireland was reported by the Belfast Telegraph to have called on the Stormont lawmakers to "spend every pound available" on the ailing construction sector, it has been announced that the companies due to build the schools, O'Hare and McGovern, will be taking on local workers.
Speaking to the Derry Journal, Social Democratic and Labour Party councillor Mark Durkan, stated that the construction projects for the St Celia's and St Mary's schools would provide a "much-needed boost" for the Northern Ireland economy and in particular its construction jobs sector.
"O'Hare and McGovern have given us an undertaking that they will enter into negotiations with local contractors and sub-contractors regarding securing local labour for the construction of both these high profile sites," he stated.
This week, the Scottish Building Federation warned that thousands of construction jobs could be placed at risk if plans to go through with a number of public sector contracts in Scotland are put on hold.
