Negligence claim - medical swab left inside man

A 77 year old grandfather is to claim medical negligence compensation after it was discovered that a medical swab was left in his body after a surgery, and only detected ten months later.

Speaking to the North Devon Journal, the unnamed pensioner explained how he was submitted to hospital for surgery to fix his twisted bowel, and that he returned to speak to the surgeon on two separate occasions complaining that he was feeling unwell. He was sent home and told that everything was ok. Ten months later he was submitted to hospital with severe abdominal pains and it was then that the medical swab from the earlier operation was discovered.

A spokesman for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust previously said that no long-term health complications were caused because of the incident, and no member of staff had been disciplined. The patient rubbished claims that he had not suffered any health problems as a result and said the matter was "in the hands of the solicitors". It is not yet known what amount of medical compensation the pensioner will claim.
