MP charged with perversion of justice over speeding offence

A former Liberal Democrat government minister and his ex-wife have appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with perverting the course of justice. The charge relates to an incident in 2003 when Vicky Pryce, the ex-wife of Chris Huhne, who is the sitting MP for Eastleigh, is alleged to have taken responsibility for a speeding offence committed by her then husband in order to spare him receiving penalty points.

The pair have not yet entered a plea however it is understood that Mr Huhne intends to plead not guilty. The case has been adjourned until 2nd March at Southwark Crown Court.

Belfast Criminal Solicitor Neil Logan stated,

“It should always be noted that the penalties for perverting the course of justice will far outweigh any penalty that is imposed for a mere road traffic offence. Motorists should always resist the temptation to distort the truth in an attempt to evade penalty points.

“In a straightforward case of speeding a motorist will normally receive a fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points on their licence. Both the fine and the penalty points may be increased by the Court in cases where the speed is considered to be dangerously excessive. In Northern Ireland motorists may obtain up to 12 points on their licence before they are disqualified from driving for a period of time.”
