Legally-binding pre-nups 'would stop "fat" payouts'

A solicitor has said that people wishing to divorce their wealthy partners may no longer be able to expect "fat" payouts for doing so.

Speaking to BBC Two's Working Lunch, family lawyer Sandra Davis explained that the introduction of legally-binding pre-nuptual agreements is something that experts have been "pushing for" for a while.

"City traders and hedge fund managers who have not yet married are going to be waving their flags in their offices at the day when pre-nups are legalised for the first time in the UK," Ms Davis joked.

When challenged on how 'romantic' pre-nuptual agreements actually are, she said that while the French and Italians are perceived as being more romantic than Britons, they have had such binding agreements for a while.

An announcement from the Law Commission revealed that it is considering whether such agreements should or could be made enforceable in UK courts.

It will not, though, be examining the legal effects on co-habiting couples.
