3 men fall from roof in separate work accidents

Three workers have fallen through the same roof at an industrial unit in Wakefield in three separate work accidents, resulting in employer Bizspace Investments Ltd being fined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The first person to fall from the roof was a caretaker who was attempting to clean guttering when he fell through the skylight. He broke his ribs and suffered severe bruising. A second employee was sent out by Bizspace to photograph the scene of the accident and he fell through a second skylight though was not seriously injured. With a decision taken to repair the skylights, an employee of Massey Roofing and Building Contractors went on to the roof three weeks after the initial accident, and he too fell from the roof. The fall from a four metre height resulted in serious injury to his spine and has left him paralysed from the waist down.

Bizspace Investments Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay costs of £9,000. An investigator from HSE said he was astonished that the practically the same accident could be allowed to happen to three different people on three different occasions.
