Northern Ireland solicitors help public sector workers win payouts
Solicitors in Northern Ireland have helped members of one of the country's biggest public sector service unions to win more than GBP 340,000 in personal injury compensation this year, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
Figures from Unison show that overall, the union has helped GBP 3 million to be awarded across the UK in 3,700 legal cases involving a variety of injuries, from car accidents and assaults to slips and trips.
"Too often we hear health and safety directives being ridiculed. However, it is clear that some employers are still not taking the necessary steps to safeguard their staff," commented Dave Prentis, Unison's general secretary.
"It is disgraceful that in 2009 so many Unison members have suffered crippling back injuries."
Earlier this month, members of Unison Northern Ireland staged a protest at Laganside Small Claims Court in support of a number of residents' associations and local networks in their campaign for housing equality.
