Managing future workplace hazards conference held

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has hosted a conference of 200 industry leaders in London to discuss safety and managing future potential hazards.

Industry leaders met to discuss good practice and how to learn from recent incidents such as the fire at Buncefield, Texas City and the Thorp plant in Sellafield.

Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSE, said: "We have seen similarities in the messages, concerns, challenges and problems discussed today. It's clear that there is much to be gained by further collaborative action across the sectors."

Ms Hackitt added that the HSE would continue to "give high priority" to the major hazards industries but told delegates that the body was "calling upon you to take the lead".

Speakers at the conference included Bill Coley, chief executive of British Energy Group and Steve Flynn, vice president of BP Group Safety and Operations.

In April this year, HSE became the single national regulatory body for health and safety at work in the UK.
