Some General Points
- Good presentation is important. Fill in a printed blank version first to avoid mistakes; demonstrate an eye for detail i.e. no spelling/grammatical mistakes.
- Answer every question on the application form; they are all there for a reason. It looks lazy and careless to leave blanks unless they are genuinely not applicable. If a particular question does not apply then you should write something to that effect rather than simply leaving that part of the form blank.
- Concise answers. If you cannot fit your answers into the space provided then you are being too long-winded. Try to be succinct; you should not need to attach appendices to the form in order to complete your answers.
- Be consistent in your answers. If you apply more than once remember that a record has been kept of your previous applications and any differing results are soon noted!
What are we looking for?
- Academics; good academics relative to the job applied for are a prerequisite to interview.
- Positions of responsibility. Don't forget sixth form positions. If you were a school captain or head boy/girl it shows a degree of responsibility and leadership from a young age.
- Work experience; a good variety of work experiences with plenty of legal exposure is highly recommended. Don't miss out any experience whether work or extra-curricular thinking that it is not relevant. Some more menial work experience can be a good indicator that you can mix with all levels and muck in.
Academic ability is by no means the only criterion for pre-selection. In addition to an excellent academic record, other desirable skills include:
- Public speaking.
- Good Communication skills.
- Commercial Awareness.
- Negotiation skills.
- Team skills.
- Membership of a debating society.
- Involvement in a Young Enterprise Scheme.
- Foreign Exchange Programmes.
- Team sports.
Other Points
Research; there is no excuse for not being well informed about Wilson Nesbitt. There is ample information available to you via brochures, publications, websites, presentations and law fairs. You can also speak to existing Wilson Nesbitt staff.
- Well thought out answers; don't regurgitate the brochure. Digest all available information and then formulate your arguments.
- What makes you stand out in crowd? This is your chance to sell yourself. Many candidates do not fully utilise the opportunity to distinguish themselves giving answers like: "I always complete work well and on time." There are obviously rather more exciting things that could have been said.
